Note 09/18

On September 15, Wilkes County officials from the planning department and the Fire Marshall's office spent most of the morning touring the mountain along with the association's president and the consultant hired to lead the Fire Road project. They provided great feedback and insight regarding the mountain and noted that our roads were "in better condition than the gravel roads maintained by the County".

Attached is the letter from the planning department indicating that the road has been now been approved as a fire road. This is a significant step and puts all properties except half of those on Casey Mountain road within the Champion Fire District. If you were previously outside the district and are now within six miles of the sub-station in Maple Springs you will be in the district and can notify your insurance company regarding the change. If you have any questions, please address them to the Wilkes County Fire Marshall at 336-921-7533.

Note 09/18

During a tour of Buck Mountain with representatives from the Wilkes County planning department and Fire Marshall's office, it was suggested that we utilize an area near the Outdoor Activity Center to construct an emergency helipad. Based on the recommendations of the professionals involved, the Board approved a plan to formulate a project in the coming weeks to implement the important suggestion. This project is not expected to incur major expenses, as it will involve creating a concrete pad with specific directional lighting. Trees alongside Deer Run on the south side of the OAC will also be cut to remove any landing obstructions. Some prep work will begin in the coming weeks, with targeted completion by next Spring.

The Board is also working with the Fire Marshall's office to install one or more additional water storage tanks on the mountain to help provide water sources in the event of fire on the mountain.

If you were unable to attend the reception at the new fire station for the Champion Fire Department, you missed the opportunity to tour an impressive facility. Your tax dollars help to fund this new state-of-the-art fire house. We are blessed to have the facility, and the team of dedicated individuals who volunteer their time in defense of our property, our homes, and our lives.

BMRC 09/18

The BMRC met on Saturday after the Board meeting. In looking ahead to the upcoming social calendar, it was decided that a Fall Festival will be held in the evening on the date of our Fall Forum (October 21). Mark your calendars now to join us for this outdoor event.

The gently sloping cleared area beside the Community Center (where the septic system is located) will be a focus for a makeover in the coming months to help provide additional space for relaxing outdoors. We will also be enhancing the exterior lighting around the Community Center to increase safety for evening events.

An unobtrusive "bubbler" system will be placed in the pond to help aeration and provide an improved environment for aquatic life. This, like the majority of improvements undertaken by the BMRC, will be funded from BMRC contributions.
